Kunal Kohli explains the funda of his new film starring Bollywood’s hit couple To filmmaker Kunal Kohli goes the credit for getting that delightful couple Rani Mukerji and Saif Ali Khan together on screen after Hum Tum. The two stars will recreate their adorable brand of magic in Yash Raj and Kunal’s co-production,Thoda Pyaar, Thoda Magic. Rani, who is doing only selective roles lately, will be seen after a long time, and that too as an angel in this film. “She’s a brilliant actor and so is Saif. I’ve shared a successful professional relationship with them,” says Kunal, who also has four kids starring in this film. “But it’s not a kiddie movie,” clarifies the filmmaker who has always experimented and worked on diverse subjects.
Incidentally, Rani and Kunal both won their first Filmfare Awards — she for the Best Actress and he for being a Best Director — for Hum Tum. So what’s the ‘magic’ going to be like in Thoda Pyaar, Thoda Magic? “The story is about a man who never got love, an angel who could not love, and four orphans who need love! It’s unlike any film we have seen till date. Thoda Pyaar... is an interesting mix of masala, humour, emotions and fantasy,” reveals Kunal.
And if the chemistry between Rani and Saif is not enough, Kunal has thrown in a lot of visual effects, like flying angels, a Mercedes car doing the most insane stunts, and several other such fantastical elements that ought to delight the viewer. “The special effects have been done by a supervisor from London. But they are just another layer in the film, the pyaar and the magic of life is what the film is really all about,” says the filmmaker.
And what about the kids in the film? “Since Thoda Pyaar... is shot in Delhi, I wanted the kids to have a Delhi accent and not look like filmi kids with gel in their hair who keep saying ‘yo’ and all. Apart from Shriya, who has done TV shows and ads, none of the other kids have faced the camera before. So I could mould them into the characters I wanted and they look so real,” says Kunal, who is pleased with his end result.
The story goes that the kids hate Saif and want to take revenge on him. “For that reason I kept Saif away from them so that the distance between them could be seen. I told Saif, ‘I know you like kids and you have two of your own, but stay away from these kids.’ And it worked,” laughs Kunal about his funda.
The film, due for release at the end of June, also stars Rishi Kapoor and Ameesha Patel. “In guest appearances, but they play pivotal roles,” says Kunal. After giving chart busting music in Hum Tum and Fanaa, the Kunal Kohli-Prasoon Joshi jodi this time has teamed up with whiz kids Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. “I’m just hoping people see all the little things we’ve tried to say in the film and get entertained and have a good time,” says Kunal.
