Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra chose Kuala Lumpur and the GIFA awards to announce his arrival into the big league. And how! The director reportedly refused to board the return flight to Mumbai along with other film personalities on December 10, since he was not given a first class ticket.
The award’s organisers had booked a chartered flight. But it had only 12 first class seats, which were already occupied by filmmakers like Rakesh Roshan.
Mehra, flush with the success of Rang De Basanti — it won eight awards in the popular category including best, director at GIFA — refused to budge, unless given a first-class seat.
“It was a very awkward situation as the director was not ready to listen. In fact, stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Amisha Patel and Arjun Rampal agreed to travel economy class but Mehra refused,” say eyewitnesses.
The organisers finally booked the director on a first-class ticket to Mumbai — but on Singapore Airlines.
When contacted about the incident, Mehra said, “We were taken very good care of. And I had a great flight back.”
