The great Indian tamasha!

One way to decipher which star/film will bag tops honours at awards galas, is to see the attendees. The rest of the stars who are spotted are performers. And some bag a double — performing as well as clinching the trophy. The remaining anchor different segments of the show. B-Town certainly does not attend such galas to cheer their fraternity.

Royal treat
The finale of the Global Indian Film Awards (GIFA) 2007 was held at an indoor stadium at Kuala Lumpur. Locals paid approx Rs 5,000-6,000 to for a glimpse of Bollywood stars, and the Malaysian royal family too was in attendance.

Tacky trophies?
Blame it on the poor quality of the awards trophies or the sloppiness of the recipients, but the GIFA trophy landed onto the stage with a thud on at least four occasions. First SRK chipped off a bit of the award while handing it over to Rakeysh Mehra.

Later, Mehra dropped one too in the course of the numerous honours his film fetched. Then, lyricist Prasoon Joshi let go of his trophy on the dais, and while giving her thank-you speech Priyanka Chopra had the top end of her trophy going for a toss. She exclaimed in horror, “My globe (which was perched atop the trophy) has come off!”

The performers
Besides local Malaysian dance troupes, Abhishek Bachchan, Amisha Patel, Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan all did solo jigs. SRK was supposed to perform but a hamstring injury prevented him from doing so. Of course, that didn’t stop him from jabbering on subjects as diverse as why Malaysians marry more than once, that his film Don was shot in Malaysia and how he greatly admired the “visionary director” Rakesh Roshan and the “superhero” Hrithik Roshan. SRK ended up sounding like Salman Khan — making bizarre comments and laughing at his own jokes.

After his performance, Abhishek Bachchan immediately left for the airport. He didn’t even wait to receive his Best Supporting Actor award moments later. The buzz was the he arrived in Malaysia only for a few hours at Shetty anna’s request.

Anna stays away
Though everyone thanked Sunil Shetty for putting up the GIFA event, Shetty himself was missing from all the events except for the promotion of Shootout At Lokhandwala. Anna played the role of backstage organiser, letting other stars hog the limelight. Considering the logistics of organising such an event, Shetty had his fair share of trials and tribulations.

Surprise surprise
Vikram Chopra bagged the Best Debut Director for Fight Club. ‘Who is he?’, was what everyone asked as he gave such a long speech. Almost felt like he was receiving a Lifetime Achievement award! When Upen Patel bagged the Best Debut award (36, China Town) he admitted that Shamita Singha was that someone special in his life.

Fumbling hosts
Arbaaz Khan and Minissha Lamba had their fair share of hiccups while anchoring segments of the show. Though the teleprompter was right across from them, both seemed out of sync with each other. They messed up names and the timing was all wrong!
