'There is dignity of labour in item songs’

Ameesha Patel says she has no qualms about doing an item number

Ameesha is worried about the way her hair is falling over shoulders in a disarray. “It just isn’t right. I want it to be this way,” she tells her make-up person, while arranging her hair so that it cascades all over her left shoulder. “I am a perfectionist. I like everything just right,” she says, and follows it up with a quick look in the mirror, and an experimental pout.
A perfectionist? A brat with oads of attitude – that’s the tagline that people in the industry have given her. But Ameesha is quick to respond, “I don’t care what people say about me. Those who know me think just the opposite, and that’s all that matters.” And what about her co-stars, who have told tales about how difficult it is to get along with her? “That’s surprising, because I am a soft-spoken, emotional person. But I like to be aloof, left to myself. Maybe that’s why people think I am difficult to get along with,” she says.
Emotional, is she? “Yes. And very sensitive too,” she avers. Sensitive to what? Humour or pain? “Both. These emotions come easily to me. Maybe that’s why I liked Lage Raho Munnabhai. It was rollicking fun,” says Ameesha.
And while one is taking down notes of these quotable quotes, Ameesha quietly intones, “By the way, I’ll be making a couple of announcements later this week.” One can only stare at her, and the mind races towards just one question: Is she getting married? “No, no. Please don’t ask embarrassing questions,” she says.
And what’s happening professionally? Is she game for item numbers? “I have no qualms about doing a good item number. Look at Sush — she is superb in her item songs. And there’s dignity of labour in them too.”
